Sasbach

Sasbach is a municipality in the district of Emmendingen and in the administrative region of Freiburg in Baden-Württemberg. It lies directly on the Rhine at the western foot of the Kaiserstuhl and borders France. The municipality is situated at about 181 metres above sea level; in the western Kaiserstuhl, among other features, the Büchsenberg with around 280 metres and the Limberg with about 192 metres shape the landscape.

The Kaiserstuhl near Sasbach has an underlying geology that is predominantly volcanic. On steep sections, volcanic rock can be exposed, while loess covers large parts of the landscape. Sasbach has a mild climate and, according to information provided by the municipality, in some years records more than 2,000 hours of sunshine.

The tradition of winegrowing in Sasbach can be traced back to Roman times. The municipality belongs to the Baden winegrowing region. Important grape varieties include Spätburgunder, Grauburgunder and Weißburgunder; in addition, among others, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer are grown. Spätburgunder is a traditional Sasbach variety for red wine production.

The wine site Eichert is described as a vineyard slope near the Rhine, shaped by volcanic weathering, and an old Rhine arm. Vineyard plots with different orientations shape the site. The wine site Gestühl is regarded as shaping the Sasbach locality of Leiselheim.
