Location and classification
The Rote Halde is a registered single vineyard (Einzellage) within the municipal area of Sasbach in the wine-growing region Baden. It belongs to the Großlage Vulkanfelsen and lies on the south-east slope of the Limberg.
Relief and soils
The slope orientation and the incline of the vineyard plots allow for long-lasting exposure to sunshine. The site is shaped by deep, heavy weathering soils with a loess layer over volcanic rock; in addition, the soil material is described as dark volcanic weathering with only a thin loess layer.
Variety and wine
Spätburgunder is the most important documented grape variety of the Rote Halde. More than 50 hectares are intended for the production of Sasbacher Spätburgunder. A documented Rote Halde Spätburgunder is a dry red wine with an Auslese quality designation and is characterised as a warm, full-bodied wine with fine acidity, tannins and extract.
Wine law and ageing
The official designation is Einzellage Rote Halde within the Großlage Vulkanfelsen. For the documented Spätburgunder, the red wines are fermented on the mash and aged in large wooden casks.
