Location and Classification
Hochberg is an officially listed single vineyard in the Jechtingen cadastral area of the municipality of Sasbach in the Kaiserstuhl. The vineyard lies on Hochberg between the Sasbach districts of Jechtingen and Leiselheim and belongs to the wine-growing region of Baden.
Topography and Soils
Hochberg reaches an altitude of about 288.7 metres above sea level. In the northern part of Hochberg there is a protected steep slope with a south-easterly aspect. The geological subsoil consists of volcanic tephrite and is largely covered by deep, fertile loess clay soils.
Viticulture and Wines
Hochberg is cultivated as a wine-growing site and is among the main sites of the Jechtingen wine estate. For the site, wines made from Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder and Spätburgunder have been documented; in addition, a Muscaris from Hochberg has been documented. The documented wine styles include dry Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder site wines, a Spätburgunder Weissherbst as a Beerenauslese, and a Muscaris as an Auslese.
Classification and Maturation
According to the Baden wine site classification, Hochberg is a single vineyard within the Großlage Vulkanfelsen in the Kaiserstuhl area of the Baden wine-growing region. For the wines from its sites, the Jechtingen wine estate documents traditional wine production in conjunction with modern cellar technology. The vineyards around Jechtingen, including Hochberg, are assigned to a warm Baden climate.
