Location and Topography
Gestühl is a named wine-growing site and elevation south-east of Leiselheim, a district of Sasbach in Baden. The small, gently undulating hill lies near the road towards Jechtingen and is at an altitude of around 240 metres. A stretch of vines following the subtle ridge divides the vineyard area into an upper and a lower section.
Soils and History
The documented soils contain weathered volcanic substrate with calcareous inclusions. For the year 1802, the establishment of vineyard land on previously uncultivated ground in Gestühl is documented; this was associated with a six-year exemption from the tithe.
Gestühl is also preserved as a historical court site. A document from 1379 names the hill among the court sites of Margrave Otto of Hachberg. Historical interpretations connect the name with a princely court held in Sasbach by King Otto III in the year 994.
Varieties and Wines
Plantings and wines from Gestühl are documented, including Chardonnay, Weissburgunder and Spätburgunder. Historical and commercial evidence also mentions Muscateller as well as Grauburgunder and Ruländer under the name Leiselheimer Gestühl. Documented bottlings include dry Weissburgunder and dry Pinot Noir.
Maturation
A documented Weissburgunder from the year 2023 was matured for six months on fine lees in a stainless steel tank and bottled unfiltered.
