Location and Winegrowing
Fellbach lies at the vine-covered foot of the Kappelberg and borders the high plateau of the Schmidener Feld. In 2023, the vineyard areas within the town limits covered 185 hectares, corresponding to 6.7 percent of the municipal area. Most of the vineyards are located on the Kappelberg.
Grape Varieties and Orientation
Winegrowing in Fellbach is predominantly geared towards red wines: in 2023, 114 hectares were accounted for by red grape varieties. Trollinger covered 63 hectares, followed by Lemberger with 13, Pinot Noir with 11 and Schwarzriesling with 10 hectares. White grape varieties were grown on around 70 hectares, including Riesling on 36 and Müller-Thurgau on 10 hectares.
Sites
The Fellbacher Goldberg is exposed to the south-east, lies at an altitude of about 240 to 280 metres, and has a slope gradient of around 30 percent. Its soils contain colourful marl, siliceous sandstone and gypsum Keuper. The Fellbacher Lämmler extends over about 100 vertical metres, is oriented from south to west and reaches slope gradients of up to 70 percent. Heavy gypsum Keuper, heat-storing reed sand and light “Stubensand” occur there.
Winegrowing Region and Development
Fellbach belongs to the protected winegrowing region Württemberg and is assigned to the Remstal-Stuttgart area, which was renamed Remstal for vintage 2026 under the wine-harvest regulations. Fellbach was first mentioned in 1121, was granted town rights in 1933 and became a “Große Kreisstadt” (major district town) in 1956.
