The vineyard Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen

Location and Climate

The Westhofen Brunnenhäuschen is a single vineyard site in Westhofen in the Wonnegau, a sub-region of Rheinhessen. The south-facing position lies to the east of the Morstein and above the Steingrube at around 180 to 240 metres above sea level. A slope of roughly 20 percent and westerly winds shape the comparatively cool mesoclimate. As a result, the grapes ripen late, while the growing season remains long.

Soils

The soil consists of clay marl with abundant limestone. In the subsoil, there is limestone and limestone bedrock; in certain areas, red Terra Rossa occurs with a high proportion of iron oxide. The calcareous soils and rock layers help to ensure water availability during dry periods.

Grape Varieties and Wine Styles

Riesling is the grape variety classified for the VDP.GROSSE LAGE. Spätburgunder is also one of the main grape varieties of the site; in addition, Silvaner and Sauvignon Blanc are grown. Dry Riesling wines are documented as Grosses Gewächs as well as Prädikatsweine, including Trockenbeerenauslesen.

History and Classification

The site has been documented since 1721 under the name am brunnenhäusschen. The name refers to a spring that was connected to a water reservoir. The former Gewann Abtserde was a distinct vineyard designation until 1971; today it forms a considerable part of the Brunnenhäuschen and lies on its lower edge. The VDP classifies the Westhofen Brunnenhäuschen as a VDP.GROSSE LAGE with a classified area of 13.06 hectares.
