Flörsheim-Dalsheim

Location and municipality

Flörsheim-Dalsheim is a municipality in southern Rheinhessen, a plateau and hilly landscape in Rhineland-Palatinate. It comprises the local districts of Dalsheim and Nieder-Flörsheim and belongs to the wine-growing region Rheinhessen as well as the sub-region Wonnegau. Dalsheim and Flörsheim were probably founded by the municipal administration in the 6th century; Flörsheim-Dalsheim became a double municipality as part of the administrative reform from 1968 to 1972.

Vineyard sites and soils

The individual sites within the large site Burg Rodenstein include Frauenberg, Bürgel, Goldberg, Hubacker, Sauloch and Steig. The Nieder-Flörsheim Goldberg lies at an altitude of 170 to 250 metres, is orientated towards the east and covers 46 hectares. Bürgel lies at 150 to 260 metres, has a south to south-easterly aspect and a slope gradient of 10 to 35 percent. The soils include, among other types, loess, limestone, marl, shell limestone (Muschelkalk), Terra fusca, clayey marl, chernozem, pararendzina, kolluvisol and rendzina. In Bürgel, shell limestone is described as being found over loess together with tertiary clays and Terra fusca.

Grape varieties and winery

For Frauenberg, Riesling and Pinot Noir are documented, and for Hubacker, Riesling. In the VDP-classified Bürgel, Chardonnay and Riesling are mentioned. The Klaus-Peter Keller winery cultivates 21 hectares of vineyard area and states a composition of 70 percent Riesling, 20 percent Burgunder varieties and Silvaner, and 10 percent Rieslaner and Scheurebe. The winery describes its wine style as being soil-driven, with energy, elegance and finesse; in addition, it produces VDP.Sekt.

Historical vineyard sites and protected designation of origin

Frauenberg was mentioned in 1290 as “an frauwenhalten” and is said to have previously belonged to a convent of nuns. Bürgel is attested in 1286 as “retro montem” and in 1358 as “uf dem berge”, Hubacker for the first time in 1610 as “am Hubacker”. Sauloch appears between 1490 and 1525 as “in dem Sawloch”, and Steig in 1346 as “uf der steygen”. Flörsheim-Dalsheim is included in the protected designation of origin Rheinhessen. Bürgel and Frauenberg in Nieder-Flörsheim are classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®.
