Goldberg

Location and classification

The Nieder-Flörsheimer Goldberg is located in the Nieder-Flörsheim district of Flörsheim-Dalsheim in the Wonnegau in Rheinhessen. This single site belongs to the Großlage Burg Rodenstein and comprises 46 hectares. It lies at an altitude of about 170 to 250 metres and faces east.

Soils and terroir

The site includes loess and colluvial soils with a humus-rich topsoil, as well as limestone rendzina from tertiary marine deposits associated with a calcareous algal reef. The rendzina is shallow to medium-depth, very rich in lime, stony and sandy loam. It shows limited water storage available to plants, good aeration and good heat retention. In addition, the site is described by a local producer as having clay marl over a limestone subsoil.

Grape varieties and wine style

Riesling is documented for the Nieder-Flörsheimer Goldberg; in addition, Muscat Ottonel is grown there. The loess and colluvial soils are associated with a restrained early development, yellow fruit, apple, pear and peach, as well as chalky or smoky impressions. From this, a medium-strength style may develop. The limestone rendzina is associated with aromas of citrus fruit, apple, gooseberry, mango and passion fruit, as well as balanced acidity and mineral-calcareous impressions.

Documented wines

From the Goldberg, Rieslings in the styles dry, Kabinett and Spätlese are documented. A Riesling from the 2023 vintage was produced from grapes from the Nieder-Flörsheimer Goldberg, left on the mash for 36 hours and matured in a Georgian clay amphora.
