Location and surroundings
Winnenden is a town in the Rems-Murr district in Baden-Württemberg, around 20 kilometres north-east of Stuttgart. Vineyards, orchards and the Swabian Forest surround the town.
Climate and geology
The municipal area belongs to the climate district of Kraichgau–Neckar basin. The average annual precipitation is 750 to 800 millimetres, and the average annual air temperature is 8.0 to 10.0 °C. The valleys of Buchenbach and Zipfelbach carry cold air towards Winnenden.
The documented soils include, among others, Pelosol-Braunerden, Parabraunerden, Pseudogley-Kolluvien and Pelosol-Rigosole. In the area, reed sandstone from the Stuttgart formation also occurs.
Viticulture and history
Several vineyard plots were designated as protected wine-growing locations in 1960 by a municipal statute, including the Holzenberg. Viticulture in the Rems-Murr district is assigned to the Remstal-Stuttgart wine-growing region within the specified cultivation area Württemberg.
Winnenden was first mentioned in documents in 1181 and was granted market rights in 1212.
