Location and History
Holzenberg is a vineyard area and a parcel (Gewann) within the municipal area of Winnenden in Württemberg. Historical cadastral maps from 1832 record the Holzenberg parcel in the area of Winnenden and Breuningsweiler. The town of Winnenden declared Holzenberg a planted vineyard area (Reblage) on 10 May 1960 by means of a local ordinance (Ortssatzung). In land value guideline documentation, the designation “Rebland Holzenberg” is used.
Topography and Viticulture
Holzenberg is documented as a steep-slope viticulture area (Steillagen-Weinbaugebiet). The cultivation of the hillside sites is labour-intensive and only partially mechanisable. Among the documented work are short vine pruning, targeted yield reduction and hand-harvesting.
Grape Varieties and Wine Styles
For the Winnender Holzenberg, Spätburgunder, Lemberger, Muskat-Trollinger and Silvaner are documented. Muskat-Trollinger is documented as Weißherbst. The documented wine styles include dry quality wine, delicately dry Spätlese and Weißherbst. A Winnender Holzenberg Silvaner is associated with marl soil; for a 2015 vintage, vines with an age of more than 60 years are specified.
Aging
A Holzenberg-Lemberger and a Holzenberg-Spätburgunder from the Luckert winery matured for twelve months in wooden casks. A Holzenberg-Silvaner from 2015 was hand-harvested, cooled before pressing, spontaneously and cool-fermented, and matured for one year on fine lees.
