Location and Landscape
Haselstein is a named vineyard area in Winnenden in the region Württemberg. The area lies between the Zipfelbach valley and the Buchenbach valley and is one of the remaining significant vineyard sites in Winnenden. The spur-like slope on a step-like escarpment has vineyards below the forested summit area.
Geology and History
At Haselstein, Lower Stubensandstone from the Stubensandstone Formation as well as Upper Coloured Marls and Lower Stubensandstone from the Middle Keuper crop out. The rock profile includes sandstone, red marl and clay-bound sandstone. In the summit area, a very dry transitional zone between former vineyards and the forest is documented.
Before land consolidation from 1962 to 1963, the vineyard terraces extended higher than today’s vineyards. In the upper area, abandoned terraces and old vineyard walls have been preserved.
Viticulture and Wines
Wine is still being grown at Haselstein; the site is also used by wineries in Winnenden for public wine events. A producer from Winnenden documents vines there that are more than 60 years old.
Haselstein wines from the winery Luckert include Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Grauburgunder, Lemberger, Acolon and Muskateller. Documented are dry white site wines from Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Grauburgunder, as well as dry or gently matured red site wines from Lemberger and Acolon. The wines are labelled as Qualitätswein and site wine; a Haselstein Chardonnay Sekt as Qualitätssekt and site Sekt.
Maturation
For individual Haselstein wines, six months in used barrique are documented for a Riesling, twelve months in barrique on the fine lees for a Grauburgunder and twelve months in used barrique for a Lemberger. The Haselstein Chardonnay Sekt matures for twelve months in the bottle.
