Location and landscape
Weinstadt is located in the Remstal in the southern Rems-Murr district of Baden-Württemberg and belongs to the natural region unit Neckar basin. The town extends on both sides of the Rems in the Waiblingen basin and includes Beutelsbach, Endersbach, Großheppach, Schnait and Strümpfelbach. The municipal area lies between about 219.99 and 493.13 metres above sea level.
Vine growing on the slopes
Vine growing is concentrated on the higher, south-facing slopes of the Schurwald and the Buocher Höhe. Vine growing is documented in all five districts; the name Weinstadt refers to the extensive vineyard areas. The Altenberg in Strümpfelbach has slopes of up to 50 percent.
Soils, climate and grape varieties
On the valley floor and on the lower slopes there is loess over Keuper claystone, while the higher vineyard sites are associated with gypsum Keuper. The Remstal area around Weinstadt is considered climatically favourable; the average annual temperature is about 9 °C, and the annual precipitation is around 675 millimetres. Grown there include Riesling, Trollinger, Lemberger, Spätburgunder, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Syrah. Weinstadt lies in the protected designated origin wine-growing region Württemberg and belongs to the Remstal area.
Historical development
Weinstadt was formed in 1975 through the merger of Beutelsbach, Endersbach, Großheppach and Schnait. Strümpfelbach had already been incorporated into Endersbach in 1973. For Großheppach, a bequest of a vineyard and a winery to Adelberg Abbey in 1290 is also documented.
