Nonnenberg

Location and History

Nonnenberg is documented as the Strümpfelbacher Nonnenberg in Weinstadt-Strümpfelbach in Württemberg. The name also denotes a hill in the area of Weinstadt; the summit is recorded at around 471 metres above sea level. The name of the parcel Nonnenberg already appears on the Strümpfelbach cadastral map from 1832.

Classification and Viticulture

The Strümpfelbacher Nonnenberg is listed with the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter as VDP.ERSTE LAGE. The classified area comprises 13 hectares and is associated with Lemberger. For the vineyard site, coloured marl and stuben sandstone are documented as soils. Some vines are planted at the foot of the slope, others in higher, more exposed positions.

Weingut Idler describes vines aged 40 to 50 years, manual work in the vineyard, as well as a selective, staged harvest. Sown rows, high vine density, short pruning, fertilisation aligned with soil analyses, reduced crop protection without insecticides over several years, regular yield reductions and variety-specific harvest dates are also documented.

Grape Varieties and Wine Styles

Alongside Lemberger, Nonnenberg wines made from Riesling, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder, Chardonnay, Zweigelt, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Blanc are documented. These include dry Rieslings from the Qualitätswein category, including Spätlese and Auslese versions.

Riesling Maturation

For the Nonnenberg Riesling from Weingut Idler, around 24 hours of must maceration time, slow fermentation and twelve months of ageing on full lees in a half cask are stated.
