Naumburg in the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region
Naumburg lies in the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region, whose vineyards follow the valleys of the Saale and Unstrut. In the Naumburg district of Großjena, the Unstrut flows into the Saale.
Steep slopes and soils
The wine landscape is characterised by steep, terraced vineyards, historic dry-stone walls and vineyard cottages. In the surrounding area, shell limestone (muschelkalk), bunter sandstone and loess can be found. The Saalhäuser near Naumburg-Schulpforte lie on steep south-facing slopes with weathered shell limestone soils.
Climate and cultivation
The region has long growing seasons, around 1,600 hours of sunshine and roughly 500 millimetres of annual rainfall. Sheltered south-facing slopes and river valleys create favourable microclimates; at the same time, winter and spring frosts remain a significant risk. Alongside widely spaced plantings, there are traditional steep and terraced sites, which are often cultivated by hand.
Wine sites and wine profile
The directory of wine sites lists the Naumburger Sonneck with 19,0210 hectares, the Naumburger Steinmeister with 46,2216 hectares and Naumburger Paradies with 21,2181 hectares. For Saale-Unstrut, among others Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder, Riesling, Silvaner, Dornfelder and Bacchus are documented; the vineyard area is predominantly planted with white varieties. The wines are considered fine-fruited and fresh, with clear aromas, elegant acidity and a lively character.
