Naumburg Paradise lies in the south of Naumburg in Saxony-Anhalt and belongs to the wine-growing region Saale-Unstrut. It is registered as a single vineyard (Einzellage) within the larger site Naumburger Göttersitz. The register shows a planted vineyard area of 21.2181 hectares for the Naumburg cadastral area.
Topography and soils
The wine-growing site features a hillside position oriented almost exclusively to the south. Deep loess soils are described as the soil type.
Grape varieties and experimental cultivation
At Naumburg Paradise, among others, Pinot Blanc, Traminer, Müller-Thurgau, Dornfelder and Spätburgunder are documented. An experiment also included Kerner, Bacchus, Müller-Thurgau and Dornfelder. The state Prussian wine-growing research institute established experimental plots there as early as after its founding in 1899.
Cultivation and wines
In documented experiments, Dornfelder used conventional vine pruning and inversion minimal pruning, while Kerner, Bacchus and Müller-Thurgau used minimal pruning in wire-frame training. The experimental plots were converted to minimal pruning in 2012 and 2013; in 2017 and 2018, mechanical yield reduction was carried out in the corresponding vineyards. The area under the vines was managed using herbicide application and mechanical cultivation; integrated plant protection was supported by forecast models, monitoring of the vineyard, and consultation recommendations.
A documented Spätburgunder from the 2023 vintage is a dry German Qualitätswein with 13.0% alcohol, 5.4 grams of residual sugar and 5.2 grams of acidity per litre. It features aromas of red fruits, dark cherries and plums, as well as a subtle smoky note. Other documented wines are Dornfelder, Spätburgunder as well as the cuvées Rosé Paradies and Roter Paradies.
