Steinmeister

Location and layout

The Steinmeister lies to the west of Naumburg on the River Saale and extends along the road towards the southern boundary of the adjacent built-up area. The vines are situated above the road locally referred to as the vineyards. The vineyard plots are divided into several larger and smaller blocks.

Terraces and cultivation

The Steinmeister is a steep-slope vineyard with extensive terraces and vineyard walls. The slope, which is strongly shaped by shell limestone, is cultivated by hand because normal mechanical cultivation is not possible due to its structure.

Grape varieties and wines

The classified grape varieties include Riesling, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder and Spätburgunder. Documented wines are also available from Blauem Zweigelt, Chardonnay, Solaris and Cabernet Cortis. Dry wines from Riesling, Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder are recorded, as are red wines from Spätburgunder and Blauem Zweigelt. A documented Steinmeister Riesling is a dry quality wine with a mineral-spicy, juicy style and fine-grained acidity; it matured for seven months on the fine lees.

History and classification

The cultivation of the historic Steinmeister vineyard by the operating family dates to 1952. The name is attributed to Cistercian monks. In the upper part of the historic vineyard stands a vineyard tower dating from the Baroque period. In the growing region Saale-Unstrut, the Steinmeister belongs as a VDP.GROSSE LAGE® to a classified area of 2.83 hectares.
