Location and landscape
Maring-Noviand is a municipality in the Mosel region, made up of the local districts Maring, Noviand and Siebenborn. It lies in the Liesertal in the middle Mosel valley. The landscape is characterised by river meanders, vineyards, forests and meadows. Three closely neighbouring valleys, cut out by the river, as well as loop-shaped hills, are a reminder of the Mosel’s earlier courses.
Vineyard sites and soils
Within the municipality there are more than 200 hectares of vineyard area. Among the individual sites assigned by law are, among others, the Maringer Honigberg, the Noviander Klosterberg, the Noviander Lambertuslay, the Noviander Römerpfad, the Maringer Juffer and the Maringer Sonnenuhr. The Maringer Sonnenuhr is a south-west-facing steep slope between about 130 and 220 metres in elevation, with 50 to 60 percent gradient and a mineral-rich slate soil. In the Noviander Klosterberg, heavy, clayey loam soils with slate sediment are found.
Grape varieties and wine styles
At the Maringer Honigberg, Riesling, Spätburgunder, Kerner and Weißer Burgunder are documented. In the Maringer Klosterberg, Cabernet Blanc, Rivaner and Sauvignac also grow; at the Noviander Römerpfad, Rivaner, Cabernet Cortis, Sauvignac and Riesling are listed. The Honigberg’s long growing season allows for late ripening. Riesling from Maring-Noviand is offered as a dry wine, Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese. A wine from the Noviander Klosterberg is a Cabernet Blanc as a German quality wine from the Mosel growing region.
History and winegrowing
Noviand is documented for the first time in a written record from the year 980. During land consolidation work, in 1977, a Roman presshouse facility was discovered south-west of Noviand, which is described as a Roman pressing station from the 2nd century. In the Noviander Klosterberg, a planted ground cover is used year-round; the soil is worked in winter only for re-sowing or for a single deep loosening. For Sekt and Crémant, traditional bottle fermentation is documented.
