Location and Topography
The Brauneberger Juffer is located in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer winegrowing region opposite the town of Brauneberg on a steep hillside facing south. The VDP profile specifies an elevation of 110 to 210 metres and a slope gradient of 60 to 80 per cent; the local description indicates that the steep sites have gradients of up to 87 per cent.
Soil and Cultivation
The soil consists of grey and blue Devonian slate with iron inclusions. The south-facing orientation ensures a sun-exposed site. In the steepest areas, traditional manual work is required; even the grape harvest is carried out by hand there.
Grape Variety and Wine Style
Riesling is classified as the grape variety. From the Juffer, Riesling wines ranging from Kabinett to Beerenauslese are documented. The VDP lists the Brauneberger Juffer as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® with a classified area of 35.00 hectares.
History and Delimitation
According to local tradition, the steep sites were already planted with vines in Roman times. During land consolidation work, in 1990 a Roman press-house was uncovered at the foot of the associated steep hillside. The name Juffer is said to have been created around 1790 in connection with three unmarried daughters of the chamberlain Wunderlich. The designation Maring-Noviander Juffer is to be considered separately; there is no evidence of a joint delimitation of the two sites.
