Sonnenuhr

Location and landscape

The Maringer Sonnenuhr is located in Maring, a district of Maring-Noviand in the Mosel wine region near Bernkastel-Kues. The contiguous vineyard site borders directly on the town and extends from the valley floor to about 130 to 220 metres above sea level. Its south-westerly aspect and the slope of 50 to 60 per cent shape this very steep site.

Soils and vineyard areas

The soils originated from slate. Blue, red and grey Devonian slate are described, which is partly linked with river sediments. The area of the single vineyard Sonnenuhr in the municipality of Maring-Noviand, recorded in the wine sites directory 2024, covers 34.2 hectares.

Grape varieties and wines

Riesling is documented as the most important grape variety of the Maringer Sonnenuhr. In addition, Spätburgunder, Rivaner, Cabernet Cortis, Sauvignac, Gewürztraminer, Goldmuskateller and Weißburgunder are mentioned in plantings or wines related to the site. Riesling Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese, as well as wines made from Spätburgunder, are confirmed. A Riesling Kabinett from the 2019 vintage was harvested at 84 degrees Oechsle and fermented to around 68 grams of residual sugar per litre.

Name and development

The namesake Sundial was built in the 1930s and later restored. A land consolidation procedure for the vineyard site area was managed by the DLR Mosel from December 2017. It included, among other things, the consolidation of owner and leased plots, improved access, and the planning of cross terraces. With a municipal by-law dated 3 May 2023, the official designation of Maring-Noviander Sonnenuhr was changed to Maringer Sonnenuhr.
