Location and Elevations
Kitzingen lies on the Main in the Main Franconia region of Bavaria. The built-up urban area is situated at about 186 to 200 metres above sea level. The highest elevation is the Eselsberg at 230 metres.
Climate and Geology
Kitzingen belongs to the Bavarian Main climate region. The area is considered particularly warm and comparatively dry; in the Kitzingen sand region, the average annual temperature is about 8.5 °C. In the geological surroundings, formations of the Upper and Middle Muschelkalk occur. On the Klettenberg, layers of the Lower Keuper are exposed, consisting of sandy, clayey and calcareous strata.
Viticulture
Within the city limits, Kitzingen has 66 hectares of vineyard area. The city is the leading municipality of the Franconian large site Hofrat in the MainSüden area. The Kitzingen viticulture includes the officially maintained vineyard sites Eherieder Berg, Eselsberg, Heißer Stein, Wilhelmsberg and Kaiser Karl. In the Kitzingen Hofrat, among other varieties, Riesling, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau and Domina are grown.
Wine-Growing History
The history of the city of Kitzingen names the year 1482 as the date of the first German wine law. A wine trail runs along historical vineyard walls and conveys the history of Kitzingen as a wine trading town.
