Location and classification
Kaiser Karl is a legally registered single vineyard near Repperndorf, a district of Kitzingen, in the wine-growing region Franconia. The site belongs to the Großlage (collective vineyard) Kitzinger Hofrat and to the MainSüden area.
Topography and soils
The vineyard is oriented to the south-west and has a slope of 15 to 25 per cent. The soils around Repperndorf, including Kaiser Karl, have developed from Muschelkalk (shell-bearing limestone).
Climate and grape varieties
Repperndorf lies in the Main River basin climate zone, which is among the warmer wine-growing regions in Germany. For Kaiser Karl, Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau are documented as the most important grape varieties. The vineyard area is given as 33 hectares in data for the year 1993.
Wine and history
The wine from the site has been marketed under the name Repperndorfer Kaiser Karl since the 1970s. For a documented Silvaner, the grapes were quickly crushed in a mash, fermented spontaneously in two used 500-litre wooden tanks, and partly fermented for ten days in an amphora. After that, the wine remained on the lees for ten months, was bottled unfiltered, and was given a small addition of sulphur.
