Location and landscape
Bechtheim is a municipality in the Wonnegau between the rivers Pfrimm and Selz, north of Worms. The municipality belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Wonnegau in the district of Alzey-Worms and comprises around 1,334 hectares. Its area extends from the Upper Rhine plain via two elevations to the Rheinhessian hill country and lies there around 80 metres higher than the plain. Bechtheim is part of the wine-growing region Rheinhessen.
Winegrowing and vineyard sites
With 679 hectares of vineyards in 2025, Bechtheim ranks among the significant winegrowing municipalities. The municipality lies in the protected designated origin area of Rheinhessen; the vineyard sites are assigned to the sub-region Wonnegau. These include Geyersberg, Hasensprung, Heiligkreuz, Rosengarten and Stein. The soils consist, among other things, of calcareous loess, loess-pararendzina, loess-kolluvisol and clay with silty clay. In the sites, Riesling, Burgundy varieties and other grape varieties grow; for Stein, Pinot varieties are explicitly documented.
Climate and wine style
For Rheinhessen, an average annual temperature of about 9.9 °C, around 550 millimetres of precipitation and about 650,000 Wh/m² of direct sunshine during the growing season are given. The vineyard site of Geyersberg is associated with robust, expressive Rieslings, Rosengarten with fruit-forward, concentrated wines and a lingering finish. Weinbau Dreissigacker produces a dry Bechtheim Riesling from vineyards such as Geyersberg, Stein, Rosengarten and Hasensprung.
History
Bechtheim is first documented in 793 in a charter of the Abbey of Fulda. Archaeological finds point to a Celtic settlement and a Roman cult site in the municipal area. The vineyard sites of Heiligkreuz, Rosengarten and Geyersberg were documented around 1500 under historical names.
