Location and classification
Geyersberg is a legally registered single vineyard site in the municipality and wine-growing area Bechtheim in the Wonnegau in Rheinhessen. It belongs to the Großlage Pilgerpfad and is listed in the vineyards register under number 730622. For the 2024 harvest, 80.3 hectares of planted vineyard area are registered.
Relief and soils
The site is classified as a hill location. The parcels are described as south-facing, wind-protected terraces. Geyersberg comprises calcareous loess soils of the Löss-Pararendzina type, as well as limestone soils of the Kalkstein-Rendzina type. The loess soils formed from calcareous dust deposited during the Ice Ages; the limestone soils are associated with tertiary marine deposits of a limestone algae reef.
Grape varieties and wines
Riesling is the most important grape variety grown in Geyersberg; in addition, other varieties are cultivated. The wines of the site are described as powerful and highly expressive. Documented bottlings include dry Rieslings. For a Geyersberg Riesling from Weinreich, long maturation on the lees prior to bottling is documented.
History of the name
The vineyard name is documented around 1500 under a historical designation. Regional tradition links it to birds of prey that nested in an earlier wooded area of the hill.
