Location and classification
Hasensprung is a single vineyard site in the municipality of Bechtheim. It lies within the Großlage Pilgerpfad in the Wonnegau sub-region of the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The documented vineyard area covers 174 hectares. The vineyard site is situated at an altitude of 140 to 180 metres above sea level and faces south.
Soils
Löss over colluvisol and löss over pararendzina are documented. The profile of löss and colluvisol features a humus-rich topsoil and very good root penetration. The löss-pararendzina is described as a deep, fertile and calcareous light loam with a clayey silty component. It has a high plant-available water storage capacity, good aeration and good root penetration.
Grape varieties and wine style
Riesling, Burgundian varieties and new grape varieties are grown in Hasensprung. In plots cultivated by Weingut Runkel, Weissburgunder and Grauburgunder are documented. On löss over colluvisol, wines are described with buffered acidity as well as aromas of yellow fruits, apple, pear and peach, complemented by chalky and smoky elements. Their structure initially appears slim and straight, and gains expressiveness with increasing ripeness. The löss-pararendzina profile is associated with yellow fruit, apple, peach, pear and citrus, a gentle acidity, medium structure and a juicy style.
Name
The name Hasensprung is either traced back to the Middle High German word “sprung” in the sense of a spring or source, or linked to the earlier or current occurrence of numerous hares in the surrounding area.
