Location and landscape
The Rosengarten is a single vineyard site in Bechtheim. It belongs to the collective vineyard site Pilgerpfad in the Wonnegau and is located in Rheinhessen. The south-facing, warm site, which is open to the south side, is characterised by loess loam and limestone soils. Sandy loess with a higher clay content has also been documented, as well as gravelly clay soils.
Wine style and grape varieties
Wines from the Rosengarten are described as fruit-rich, concentrated and lingering on the palate. Riesling is documented as a dry, full-bodied, spicy and complex wine made from fully ripe grapes. Riesling Kabinett with residual sweetness, fresh fruit and mineral notes is also documented. Spätburgunder comes from the site, among other places from the Weinreich winery.
Cultivation
For its Rosengarten Riesling, the Oekonomierat Johann Geil Erben winery documents old vines and an individual selection of fully ripe grapes.
History
The vineyard site is first documented around 1500 under a historical name for the Rosengarten. According to local tradition, the Count of Leiningen maintained a Roßgarten there that belonged to an estate located in the town centre.
