Location and wine-growing area
Serrig is situated in the Saar valley and is surrounded by extensive forests and vineyards. The town belongs to the quality winegrowing area of Mosel and to the winegrowing region of Saar. The legally delimited area for Saarland wine runs from Konz to Serrig.
Steep slopes and soils
Winegrowing in the Mosel region around Serrig is characterised by predominantly steep vineyards. The regional average slope is 23 percent; most vineyards face south-east to south-south-west. Predominant is paleozoic, mostly Devonian slate; in the Saar valley and on the river terraces, river sediments are also found.
Serrig vineyard sites
The Serrig Herrenberg and the Serrig Würtzberg face towards the Saar, set on very steep slate slopes. The Würtzberg reaches a slope of up to 60 percent and has a height difference of almost 200 metres. In the Herrenberg, blue slate predominates, while the Würtzberg is characterised by red slate, quartzite and a higher proportion of humus. At Serrig Schloss Saarsteiner, the Saar influences the microclimate and softens the effect of the pronounced acidity of the wines.
Grape varieties and winemaking
Riesling is the most important grape variety on the steep slate slopes between Serrig and Konz. In the Herrenberg, White Burgundy and Auxerrois are also documented; in the Würtzberg, Pinot Noir is grown. The wines from Serrig vineyard sites include mineral, elegant Rieslings as well as more robust and spicier Rieslings from parcels with red slate. In the Saar area, dry, Kabinett and late-harvest (noble-sweet) styles are produced. Work in the vineyard and picking are done by hand in Herrenberg and Würtzberg; in the Würtzberg, additional strict selection is carried out during the harvest and at the sorting table. At Würtzberg winery, the wines ferment spontaneously in wooden casks or stainless-steel tanks.
