Location and Orientation
Würtzberg is a vineyard site in Serrig in the Mosel wine-growing region and lies in the Saar valley directly above the Saar. The south-south-easterly oriented location is at about 200 metres above sea level and has a slope of 30 to 60 per cent. The difference in altitude is almost 200 metres.
Climate and Soils
The Saar region is described as comparatively cool. The steep slate slopes store the heat of the day and release it again at night. The soil type is identified as grey slate; in addition, a higher proportion of humus, quartzite inclusions and around 50 per cent red slate are mentioned.
Cultivation and Grape Varieties
Würtzberg is an individually owned vineyard site that is farmed exclusively by the Würtzberg winery. The area classified by the VDP comprises 4.00 hectares. In the parcels there are around 6,000 vines per hectare, many of them older than 70 years. Riesling, Weißburgunder and Spätburgunder are planted. The Spätburgunder was planted in 1986 in the warmest and steepest parcel and is described by the winery as the first red grape variety planted on the Saar. The work is carried out by hand; the grapes are selectively picked by hand.
Classification and Wine Style
Würtzberg is grown as a VDP.GROSSE LAGE® in Serrig in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer wine-growing region. The winery describes the wines as more powerful and more piquant than wines from Serriger Herrenberg, with mineral character and elegance at the same time. Mention is made of a dry Riesling Großes Gewächs from parcel 5, as well as a dry Riesling from parcels 6 and 7 as a red slate wine. The high slate walls and slate steps of the site are protected as monuments; according to the winery, the walls reach a height of up to about ten metres.
