Geographical classification
Heiligenborn was an officially registered single vineyard in Serrig in the Saar wine-growing district of the Mosel wine-growing region in Germany.
Site and planting
The parcels of Heiligenborn were predominantly steep. Devon slate was given as the prevailing soil type. According to the assessment that was decisive for the later incorporation into Vogelsang, White Riesling was the only grape variety planted there.
Change of vineyard name designation
Heiligenborn was abolished as an independent vineyard name designation; the parcels were incorporated into the single vineyard of Vogelsang. The revised entry includes parcels from the cadastral district of Serrig, section 50, numbers 30/0 and 41/1. The designation Vogelsang may be used for products from the 2016 vintage onwards, while wines from the 2015 vintage and earlier retain the previously applicable geographical designations, including Heiligenborn.
Historical context
Following the vineyard name reform of 1971, Heiligenborn was one of three vineyards listed for the State Viticulture Domain of Serrig. The former domain existed from 1904 until the late 1980s. In 1985 and 1986, around nine hectares were taken out of production there; in 1990, the entire domain was sold.
Operation of the domain
An internal field railway transported the harvested grapes directly from the vineyard to the pressing house. This had eight presses, while the cellar offered space for around 300 fudder barrels.
