Location and classification
The König-Johann-Berg is a registered single vineyard in Serrig in the Saar region of the Mosel. It belongs to the Großlage Scharzberg and is listed in the official vineyards register as a single vineyard of the cadastral district of Serrig under vineyard number 460257.
Topography and soils
The steep slope faces from south-west to south-east. In the vineyard there is grey slate and Bunter sandstone; in the terraces, weathered seams of slate can be seen.
Cultivation
The vineyard, which had previously lain fallow, was brought back into cultivation in 2006 with terraces laid out across the slope and parallel to the contour lines. This design creates more soil that the vines can root in, aligns the vine rows towards the sun and, with winds blowing down the valley, supports the drying of the vines. For the wines associated with the site, selective hand-harvesting, larger spacing between the vines and fermentation with natural yeasts are also documented.
Grape variety and wine styles
Under the vineyard name Serriger König Johann Berg, several Rieslings are documented. These include dry Riesling, off-dry Riesling, Riesling Spätlese and dry Riesling as Auslese. The wines are described with complex mineral character and ripe fruit; in addition, the site is associated with high must weights and pronounced ripeness in suitable vintages. The vineyard is in the sole ownership of the König Johann winery.
