Location and Landscape
The Herrenberg is a single-vineyard site in Serrig in the winegrowing region Mosel. The vineyard is directly oriented towards the Saar and has a south-southwest to southeast orientation. The documented slope gradient is 45 to 70 percent.
Soil and Climate
The south-southwest location ensures strong exposure to sunlight. The slate slopes store the warmth of the day and release it again at night. The soils are described as grey slate and more skeletal blue slate.
Ownership and Grape Varieties
The Herrenberg is entirely owned by the Würtzberg winery and is documented by the winery as a monopole site. For the 6.51 hectares classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE, Riesling is identified as the classified grape variety. In the Serriger Herrenberg parcels, the winery also documents Weißburgunder, Auxerrois and Chardonnay.
Cultivation and Wines
All grapes are hand-harvested and during the harvest as well as at the sorting table are strictly selected. The winery describes the Herrenberg Rieslings as slender, elegant and mineral, as well as gently spicy and fine-fruited. Documented bottlings include Riesling Großes Gewächs trocken, Riesling Spätlese, Riesling Auslese and the delicately off-dry Riesling Blauschiefer. The wines ferment spontaneously in wooden barrels or stainless-steel tanks, are matured on the lees for longer and bottled late.
