Location and Topography
The Gaibach Chapel Hill lies to the east of Gaibach on the boundary with the Kolitzheim district of Zeilitzheim. In the south, the vineyard site is bounded by the Gaibach stream. It is situated at the edge of the Sonnenberg at an altitude of about 280 metres and has a slope of approximately 15 percent. The aspect ranges from south-east to south-west; in addition, south and east exposures are also mentioned.
Soils and Grape Varieties
The vineyard lies on soils of Upper Muschelkalk and Lettenkeuper. The area under vines covers approximately 27 hectares. Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner are the predominant grape varieties; in addition, Riesling and Schwarzriesling are listed as important varieties.
History and Wine Law
In 1780, some 78 Morgen with vines were planted in the Gaibach cadastre. In 1978, there were still 1.6 hectares planted on the Chapel Hill. In the official Franconian vineyard register, the Volkach-Gaibach Chapel Hill is assigned to the area of the Volkacher Mainschleife and the Großlage Kirchberg (Volkach).
