Gaibach

Location and viticulture

Gaibach is a district of Volkach with around 500 inhabitants in the wine-growing region Franken. The vineyard sites associated with Gaibach, Schloßpark and Kapellenberg, cover according to the tourism authority 12 and 27 hectares respectively.

Vineyard sites and soils

The vineyard register also lists Eselsberg, Kapellenberg and Schloßpark in the Volkach district of Gaibach. The Ratsherr site lies in the area of the Volkach Mains loop and, according to VDP information, faces southwards. It is about 200 metres high and up to 60 percent steep. Its subsoil consists of shell limestone with a thin layer of clay, as well as Lettenkeuper; it is classified for Silvaner, Riesling and Spätburgunder.

Landscape and cultivation

Kapellenberg is described as loess-clay, while the south-facing Schloßpark is associated with shell limestone and weathered Keuper materials. For the wine-growing landscape in Gaibach, a municipal water use concept names the preservation of the vineyard landscape, the reduction of erosion through active soil cultivation and irrigation infrastructure as planning objectives. For the Ratsherr site, a comparatively low amount of rainfall is also described, as the nearby Spessart reduces the entry of clouds.

History

Gaibach has been connected with a local knightly family since the 12th century. In the village there is a former Schönborn water castle from around 1700, which was later converted into a late-Baroque pleasure castle. The Gaibach constitution column was created between 1821 and 1828 and in 1832 was the setting for the Gaibach festival.
