Location and orientation
The Eselsberg is a registered Franconian vineyard site in the area of the Volkacher Mainschleife. It extends across the districts Stammheim in Kolitzheim and Gaibach in Volkach. The vineyards lie on slopes above the Main near Stammheim; the section there is predominantly oriented to the south to south-west.
Soil and grape varieties
The soils of the Eselsberg are documented as shell limestone with loess overlay. In the Stammheim plantings, among others, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Kerner, White Pinot, Rieslaner, Domina, Dornfelder and Scheurebe are grown.
Wines and cultivation
Documented wines from the site include dry Silvaner and dry White Pinot, Kabinett wines from Bacchus and Scheurebe, a Rieslaner Spätlese, as well as Domina wines including a Barrique bottling. The Bocksbeutel wine estate Scheller describes for its Eselsberg vines a nature-oriented cultivation with protection and promotion of native flora and fauna. For selected wines from Eselsberg parcels, yield regulation by thinning the grapes and selective hand harvesting is also documented.
History
The Stammheim wine chronicle records wine tithes of 50 Morgen of vineyard area for the year 1240. As part of the first land consolidation, in 1962 a 23-hectare vineyard was created for Eselsberg. The name Stammheimer Eselsberg has been used since the 1970s for marketing wines from this site.
