Location and classification
Hoher Berg is a single vineyard site in the wine-growing region Württemberg, in the wine-growing area Kocher-Jagst-Tauber and in the Großlage Kocherberg. The vineyards are assigned to the municipalities of Ingelfingen and Künzelsau and are located in the Kochertal near Ingelfingen. A wine education trail runs through the site between Ingelfingen and Criesbach.
Relief, climate and soils
The slope, which faces south-east, lies in a mild, sunny climate, the rainfall of which is influenced by the Kochertal. The vineyard soils are associated with Muschelkalk slopes and include Rigosols and Rigosol-Pararendzinas from Muschelkalk slope debris and redeposited material. Calcareous fill soils are also found. The terrain of the wine education trail has a height difference of around 80 metres.
Vines and styles of wine
At Hoher Berg, among other varieties, Riesling, Silvaner, Spätburgunder, Portugieser, Grauburgunder, Blauer Zweigelt and Lemberger are documented. Further plantings related to the site or wines include Müller-Thurgau, Chardonnay, Merlot, Schwarzriesling, Acolon and Pinot Meunier. The range extends from dry Riesling, Silvaner, Spätburgunder and Lemberger wines to other dry red and white wines, semi-dry and sweet Riesling styles, as well as rosé.
Viticulture and history
Viticulture at Ingelfinger Hoher Berg has been documented since the 17th century; the Gaufer winery traces its local farming and winemaking family back to the year 1623. For the site, seven hectares of vineyard area are given for the Gaufer winery. There, permanent ground cover, environmentally friendly plant protection, natural soil care and, in top sites, cultivation with reduced yields are documented. Vine care is oriented towards the intended wine quality. The Riesling is classically matured in stainless steel and fermented under controlled conditions, while documented Spätburgunder ripen in wooden barrels or barriques and Pinot Meunier is fermented on the skins.
