Location and Landscape
Ingelfingen is a wine-growing town in the central Kocher valley and belongs to the wine-growing region Württemberg. The Ingelfingen-Lipfersberg area lies in the Kocher-Jagst plains, predominantly on Upper Muschelkalk, and is at an elevation of around 375 metres above sea level.
Geology and Wine Educational Trail
Between Ingelfingen and Criesbach, on the valley floor, red Bunter sandstone marl and clay slate are exposed due to the Niedernhall fault. In the wine-growing area, these layers are largely covered by slope deposits of the Muschelkalk above. The official wine educational trail runs for 1,800 metres through the vineyards and has an elevation difference of 80 metres. It provides information about soils, types of rock, grape varieties, methods of work, and the local conditions for winegrowing.
Winegrowing and History
Winegrowing has been documented in Ingelfingen since at least 1248, when vineyards were mentioned in a record relating to the monastery of Comburg. The Ingelfingen winegrowers’ cooperative was founded in 1892 to support winegrowing as a basis for livelihood. In 1965, the winegrowers’ cooperatives of Ingelfingen and Criesbach came together to form the Kochertalkellerei Ingelfingen; in 1976 Belsenberg joined and in 2000 Forchtenberg.
Wine-Law Classification
Ingelfingen is assigned in the Baden-Württemberg wine designation to the Großlage Kocherberg in the Kocher-Jagst-Tauber area. The single vineyard Hoher Berg includes Ingelfingen.
