Location and landscape
The vineyard site of Burgstall is located on the sunny, south-facing slope of the Kocher valley between Niedernhall and Criesbach. The area under vines extends to the municipal boundary between Niedernhall and Ingelfingen. Steep slopes rise there above the Kocher valley up to around 340 metres above sea level at the foothill of the Bronnberg.
Geological profile
Burgstall lies on the outspur of the formation of the Middle Muschelkalk. A limestone-bearing spring tuff hill is the defining feature: a spring from the Bronnberg outspur deposited calcium carbonate over a long period and formed Burgstall. Its southern side slopes steeply down into the valley.
Viticulture and development
The vineyards were traditionally cultivated as steep slopes with retaining walls and vineyard paths. For the parcels at the Middle Burgstall in Niedernhall, conversion into cross terraces was approved in order to make long-term cultivation easier and to counteract abandonment of the vineyards. For this purpose, the town of Niedernhall acquired around 2.75 hectares; in autumn 2024 the vines were cleared, after which earthworks, drainage, replanting and the construction of wire trellis frames were planned.
Historical context
Viticulture has long been of significance in Niedernhall. A winery press house and a wine tithe are documented there as far back as 1291. Burgstall is one of the historically significant, south-facing vineyard sites; the place-name Burgstall and the vineyard path Burgstallweg have been handed down from the history of the wine-growing area. Legally, Burgstall is listed as a single vineyard within the Kocher-Jagst-Tauber area with Criesbach and Niedernhall as the associated municipalities.
