Location and viticulture
Niedernhall is located in the middle Kochertal in Hohenlohe and belongs to the wine-growing region Württemberg. The mild climate favours viticulture. The vineyards extend along the sun-exposed steep slopes along the Kocher and cover almost 40 hectares.
Vineyard sites and soils
Among the areas used for wine-growing on the valley slopes are Engweg and Burgstall. The steep sites have mineral-rich shell limestone soils. Both Burgstall and Engweg are classified as single-vineyard sites in the large site Kocherberg in the Kocher-Jagst-Tauber area.
Development of the vineyards
Viticulture in Niedernhall has been documented for more than 1,000 years. In very steep Engweg, small vineyard terraces were created in the course of a land consolidation in 2006. In 2025, the town announced that it would convert fallow wine-growing areas in the area of Mittlerer Burgstall into crosswise terraces and lease them to winegrowers.
History of wine-growing
The Niedernhall winegrowers’ cooperative was founded in 1934. Until it reached its 75th anniversary, wine was processed in the listed historic winery press-house and marketed under the name Distelfink. In 2012, the Niedernhall winegrowers joined the Hohenlohe winery in Adolzfurt.
