Location and Classification
Alde Gott is a legally designated single vineyard in the Ortenau area of the Baden winegrowing region. It is located in the vicinity of Sasbachwalden and Lauf on the west-facing slopes of the northern Black Forest. The vineyards around Sasbachwalden also include higher-lying hillside sites.
Soils and Climate
The vineyard site is characterised by soils made of weathered granite. It is situated in a landscape designated by the municipality of Sasbachwalden as a climate region suitable for wine growing.
Grape Varieties and Wines
The documented grape varieties include Blue Spätburgunder, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer. Blue Spätburgunder accounts for around 55 percent of the vineyard area belonging to Alde Gott; individual vines are stated to be up to 50 years old. The site produces both red and white wines, including Spätburgunder, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and Grauburgunder.
History
Wine growing in Sasbachwalden is documented by a winegrowing privilege granted in 1601. The name Alde Gott is associated with a local legend from the period after the Thirty Years’ War and was later transferred to the vineyard site and the Sasbachwalden winegrowers’ cooperative. Alde Gott Winzer Schwarzwald eG was founded in 1948 in Sasbachwalden.
