Location and Natural Region
Sasbachwalden is located in the Ortenau wine-growing district within the Baden wine-growing region in Germany. The municipality covers 1,813 hectares, of which 1,140 hectares are forest, and stretches from about 172 metres in the foothills zone up to 1,164 metres on the Hornisgrinde. The residential areas extend to roughly 800 metres, the vineyards to about 500 metres above sea level.
Conditions for Viticulture
The vineyards are situated in a sunny position at the western edge of the Black Forest. In the wine-growing region, weathered soils from granite and slate occur. The Oberkirch granite, also known as Sasbachwalden granite, forms part of the south-western edge of the granite massif of the northern Black Forest.
Viticulture and Grape Varieties
Viticulture in Sasbachwalden has been documented for more than 400 years; a wine right was granted in 1601. Typical grape varieties are Spätburgunder, Müller-Thurgau and Riesling. In addition, among others Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Ruländer and Kerner are grown. The wines include red, white and rosé variants. The vineyard site Alde Gott is located within the municipal area.
Klostergut Schelzberg
The Klostergut Schelzberg was first mentioned in 1530 as a wine-growing farm, was secularised in 1803 and has been in the possession of the Hockenberger family since 1928. The vineyard site is legally protected. The estate processes exclusively grapes from its own vineyards and bottles the wines as producer bottlings; among other things, Kabinett, Qualitätswein and Spätlese are offered in dry, mild and rosé styles.
