Location and vineyards
The Klostergut Schelzberg is located at Am Schelzberg 1 in Sasbachwalden in the Baden wine region. The winery is at the entrance to the Sasbachwalden valley and is surrounded by its own vineyards. The vineyard area covers around six hectares.
History and origin
The estate was already documented before 1500 as the property of a foundation based in Baden-Baden and was first mentioned as a winery in 1530. Before the secularisation in 1803, it belonged to Kloster Schwarzach. The Hockenberger family acquired the Klostergut in 1928.
Wines and bottling
Only grapes from the winery’s own vineyards are processed. The selection includes, among others, Grauburgunder, Riesling, Johanniter, Spätburgunder, Shiraz and Syrah. White, rosé and red wines are offered, including Kabinett and Qualitätswein. Spätlesen are sold under the name Der schwarze Pfaff vom Schelzberg. The wines are bottled as an estate bottling; the designation Klostergut Schelzberg is legally protected.
Maturation
Depending on the grape variety, the wines mature in stainless-steel tanks or traditional wooden barrels. For a dry Spätburgunder Auslese from the 2020 vintage, 19 days of contact with the must are documented.
