Location between the Rheine lowlands and the Black Forest
Achern lies at the transition between the Upper Rhine lowlands and the Achertal valley, on the western edge of the Black Forest.
Winegrowing in Baden and the Ortenau
Achern is assigned to the wine-growing region Baden. Baden belongs to the EU wine-growing zone B and includes the sub-region Ortenau. In Mittelbaden, especially in the Ortenau, Riesling and Spätburgunder are among the leading grape varieties.
Steep slopes at Bienenberg
The Bienenberg in Oberachern comprises south-facing, steep vineyard slopes. The terrain rises from about 155 to around 251 metres above sea level. Weathered granite is documented as the subsoil, which is exposed in some places. The site belongs to the warm Upper Rhine wine-growing area and benefits from its sunny orientation.
Vines, vinification and management
With the Bienenberg and a wine-growing estate in Oberachern, Blauer Spätburgunder, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Weißer Burgunder, Sauvignon blanc and Grauburgunder are grown. The wines include Spätburgunder and Grauburgunder, including in dry styles. Higher-quality Pinot wines ripen in used barriques, while simpler red wines ripen in large wooden casks. The steep southern slopes are worked partly by hand, with hand harvest and direct selection of the grapes.
