Location and Topography
The Bienenberg vineyard is locally connected to Oberachern, a district of Achern. It lies at the transition between the Rhine plain and the Achertal valley. The south-facing vineyard plots include steep slopes.
Altitude and Soil
With around 251 metres, the Bienenberg forms the highest point of an orchard and viticulture educational trail that begins in Oberachern at approximately 155 metres. In parts of the vineyard, granite is exposed; as the substrate for the vines, weathered granite has been documented.
Grape Varieties and Wines
In connection with an Oberachern operation, Blue Pinot Noir, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon blanc are grown. The Bienenberg wines include Burgundy wines such as Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, which are also made dry.
Cultivation and Tradition
A local estate has cultivated the steep southern slopes for five generations. Work in the steep vineyards is carried out partly by hand, including hand-harvesting and direct selection of the grapes. Higher-quality Burgundy wines mature in used barriques, while simpler red wines mature in large wooden casks.
