Weisenheim am Sand

Weisenheim am Sand is a municipality in the district of Bad Dürkheim in Rhineland-Palatinate and is located in the Vorderpfälzer Rhine plain between the Haard edge in the west and the Rhine in the east. The municipality’s area of around 1,498 hectares is characterised by extensive fruit orchards and vineyards.

The vineyard sites are situated in the flat Rhine plain at low elevations between the Haard and the Rhine. Deposits of sand and gravel go back to sediments transported by the former Rhine and other rivers in the Tertiary and Pleistocene into the Upper Rhine Graben. In the Hasenzeile, the documented soils range from sandy loam and loamy sand to sand.

Viticulture in Weisenheim am Sand has been documented since the eighth century. With more than 360 hectares of vineyard area, the municipality is one of the larger wine-growing communities in the Palatinate. For the area located north of the town, a 2024 planning document shows around 48 hectares of vineyard area within a planning area of 57 hectares. Riesling has been promoted particularly, while Portugieser accounts for a significant proportion of the vineyard area.

The settlement was first mentioned in documents in 771 in the vicinity of the Lorsch and Weißenburg monasteries. The name “Weißhein uffm Sand” has been documented since 1522. The local hierarchy of vineyard sites lists, among others, Goldberg and Hahnen as single vineyard sites.
