Location and municipality
Teningen is a municipality in the district of Emmendingen in Baden-Württemberg, about 16 kilometres north of Freiburg between the Black Forest and the Kaiserstuhl. The municipality comprises Teningen, Köndringen, Bottingen, Nimburg, Heimbach and Landeck.
Climate and landscape
The climate in the Nimburg area is favoured by warmth. There are warm summers, mild, snow-poor winters, around 850 millimetres of annual precipitation and an average annual temperature of about 10 °C. The landscape on the Nimberg is hilly and shaped by numerous loess hollow roads; a documented vineyard site shows a slight southerly aspect.
Soils and wine-growing
In the Nimburg area, Quaternary and Pliocene sands and gravels of the Upper Rhine Graben as well as loess, redeposited loess, alluvial loam and covering sediments of the Neuenburg Formation are documented. The municipality’s vineyard area covers about 215 hectares. Köndringen was historically shaped by viticulture and agriculture.
Documented vineyard sites
The Alte Burg in Köndringen is a 9-hectare classified site with a southwest to south-southwest aspect, an elevation of 200 to 280 metres and slope gradients of 0 to 30 per cent. Its soils consist of weathered shell limestone and loess; Spätburgunder is listed as the classified grape variety. In Heimbacher Bienenberg, Rivaner is grown. For the Nimburg-Bottinger Steingrube, Riesling, Chardonnay, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder and Spätburgunder are documented. As rocks and sediments, Buntsandstein, loess and limestone are mentioned; a documented sparkling wine from this site was traditionally fermented in the bottle and stored for about 48 months on fine lees.
