Location and classification
Alte Burg is an officially listed single vineyard in the wine-growing region Baden. It is assigned to the Köndringen and Mundingen areas and is associated with Teningen and Emmendingen. The Köndringen part lies in Breisgau.
Topography and soils
The section in Köndringen comprises slopes facing south-west to south at around 200 to 280 metres above sea level. The slope gradient ranges from 0 to 30 percent. The soils there were formed from weathered Muschelkalk with loess. In Mundingen, loess, loess marl and Muschelkalk are described.
History and wine law
For the Mundingen vineyard area, the designation Alte Burg was entered into the vineyard register in 1971; the designations Landecker Berg and Geigenberg were rejected. The Köndringen part is classified by the VDP as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® and comprises 9 hectares.
Grape varieties and wine style
The Köndringen part is classified by the VDP for Spätburgunder. For the Mundingen Alte Burg, Burgundian grape varieties, Cabernets, Muskateller, Chardonnay and Johanniter are documented. The climate in Mundingen is described as moderately warm with adequate rainfall. A documented wine from Mundingen’s Alte Burg is a dry Spätburgunder red wine.
