Piesport

Location and winegrowing

Piesport is a winegrowing village on the Middle Moselle in the Mosel wine-growing region. With around 413 hectares of vineyard area, the town is the largest winegrowing community on the Moselle by vineyard area.

Terroir and climate

The vineyards benefit from the microclimate of the Moselle bend and strong sunshine. Around 100 hectares of the vineyard area are in steep slopes with mineral-rich slate soils.

Grape variety and wine style

In the steep-slope vineyards of Piesport, Riesling dominates. The village is particularly associated with Riesling wines from slate-influenced steep-slope vineyards.

Winegrowing history

Near the Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, Roman wine-pressing installations from the 2nd and 4th centuries AD were investigated archaeologically. The Goldtröpfchen is a single vineyard; its name may appear on wine labels together with the place name.
