Location and classification
Hofberger is a legally registered single vineyard (Einzellage) on the Moselle in the Bernkastel area. The vineyard plots are located in the cadastral municipalities of Dhron, Neumagen and Niederemmel and are connected with Neumagen-Dhron as well as Piesport. In the vineyard register, the single vineyard is listed under number 410408 with the designation Dhron and Piesport.
Area and topography
The 2024 vineyard register lists 49.5 hectares for Hofberger in Dhron, less than one hectare in Neumagen and 10.6 hectares in Piesport-Niederemmel. The vineyards extend along the side valley (Seitentals) of the Dhronbach of the Moselle and have slope gradients of about 30 to 60 percent. The plots on the west bank are orientated east-south-east.
Soil and grape variety
The soils are described as shallow-rooted and partly stony. They consist of weathered blue slate with quartzite veins and deposits of iron oxides. Riesling is the most important documented grape variety for Hofberger.
Wine style and history
For Riesling from the Dhroner Hofberger, a combination of red must and opulent fruit is described, which is attributed to the iron-oxide-containing soils. The core site (Kernlage) was among the best vineyards in the 1868 Prussian vineyard classification. A land consolidation (Flurbereinigung) in 1971 expanded the designation considerably to areas on the opposite bank of the Moselle.
