Location and Landscape
Goldtröpfchen is a vineyard site on the Moselle, connected with Piesport and Neumagen-Dhron. The site forms a large amphitheatre on the outer bend of the Moselle around Piesport.
Orientation and Soils
The areas oriented from southeast via south to southwest lie at about 120 to 200 metres above sea level. According to the VDP, the slope gradient is 40 to 90 percent. The deep-rooting, strongly weathered soils are made up of dark Devonian slate with quartz and further minerals; in places, their topsoil fraction is high.
Climate and Grape Variety
Goldtröpfchen has a long duration of sunshine. The eastern and western slopes offer protection from wind. The designated grape variety is Riesling. The classified area comprises 69.00 hectares.
History and Classification
According to the VDP, viticulture was already carried out in Goldtröpfchen in the year 371 by the Romans. The municipality of Piesport dates the first documented written use of the site name to 1868; a cellar register from 1875 records the sale of a 1868 Piesporter Goldtröpfchen to Berlin. Goldtröpfchen is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® and is managed by the municipality of Piesport as the single-vineyard designation Piesporter Goldtröpfchen in the Mosel winegrowing region and in the area of Bernkastel.
