Location and Classification
Treppchen is a vineyard site in Piesport in the Mosel wine-growing region. The vineyards of Piesport are assigned to the Bernkastel area and the Großlage of Michelsberg. The municipality lists Treppchen as a named vineyard site with an approximate area of 190 hectares.
Topography, Climate and Soils
The Piesporter Treppchen lies on the right bank of the Mosel and is noticeably flatter than the other Piesport vineyard sites. The sheltered site in the Mosel valley and the river’s heat-retaining effect favour the location. Described soils include sandy loam, gravel and light slate, as well as limestone, calcareous marl, loam and clay.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
The flatter terrain and the different soils allow, in addition to Riesling, for plantings of Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Spätburgunder, Merlot and Dornfelder. Wines from the Piesporter Treppchen are described as powerful and fruit-focused. Documented examples include Rieslings from the categories Qualitätswein and Auslese, as well as Spätburgunder.
Farming by Individual Producers
One producer reports for its wines from the Piesporter Treppchen controlled low yields, hand harvesting and hand selection, gentle processing, and spontaneous fermentation in large wooden casks or stainless steel.
