Location and Geography
Obermoschel is a town in the Donnersberg district in Rhineland-Palatinate and belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Nordpfälzer Land. The town covers 10.15 km² and lies at an official elevation of 206 metres. Its location at the meeting point of three valleys connects the North Palatinate Uplands with the river valleys of the Glan and Nahe. Obermoschel belongs to the wine-growing region Nahe.
Winegrowing on Steep Slopes
The vineyards are located for the most part on steep slopes that are difficult to cultivate. For winegrowing in Obermoschel, volcanic slate soils are described. At the Schloßberg there is porphyry, while the Geißenkopf, the Langhölle and the Sonnenplätzchen are characterised by weathered sandstone; the Silberberg shows clay slate.
Sites and Wine Styles
Compared with the Nahe Valley, the climate is cooler. The slower ripening process preserves the acidity and also supports the development of the aromas. The Langhölle produces Riesling for structured sparkling wines, while Rieslings from the Schloßberg are described as mineral. Wines from the Silberberg are considered fruity and spicy, with mostly moderate acidity.
History
Obermoschel has been documented since about 900 and was granted town rights in 1349. A historical travel account also records that Johann Peter Hebel drank Obermoschel wine in 1794.
